[british elections] summary for non-brits

From the BBC:

Labour is suffering election losses in England and Wales and has seen a swing to the SNP in Scotland - but claims to have avoided electoral "disaster". The contest in Scotland is still too close to call with half of the results in - but it has been marred by problems with the voting system.

In Wales Labour looks likely to lose control of the Welsh assembly. The Tories say their 41% share of the vote in England puts them on course for victory at the next general election. The Lib Dems appear to be losing ground overall despite some high profile wins.

Possibly Labour is right in saying it has avoided disaster. Ho hum.

  1. Conservatives have achieved a great deal from this result - it's onward and upward from now on.

  2. The Conservatives have gained 18 seats in the East Riding of Yorkshire. That has turned the council from NOC to a Conservative majority of 27. It was a fantastic night at the count!

  4. I'm not, as you know, a Tory. I'm not anything at the moment. But I do think Labour have deserved their losses this time. The Tories are at least working hard and they have a charismatic and pleasant young leader whom you feel you could talk to.

  5. Expectations were set so low for Labour that anything short of a universal meltdown isn't disastarous The Lib Dems seem to be the big losers in terms of councillors lost, because they don't even have the excuse of mid term blues.

  6. Surely the stage is now set for a Tory victory?
