Just to give Sparkle the benefit of the doubt, perhaps she really was trying to commemorate the Trooping but if so, she’s being appallingly advised by someone … which makes me think someone has it in for her … someone high up.  Revenge?

17.  Statins (on Quora)

Long-Term Side Effects of Statin Use for Controlling High Cholesterol Levels

Statins are a class of medications widely prescribed to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. While effective in achieving these goals, long-term use of statins has been associated with a range of side effects. Understanding these potential risks is crucial for patients and healthcare providers to make informed decisions about the benefits and drawbacks of prolonged statin therapy.

Muscle Pain and Weakness

One of the most common side effects reported by long-term statin users is muscle pain, weakness, or cramps, a condition known as myopathy. In severe cases, this can progress to rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition where muscle breakdown leads to kidney damage. Although rhabdomyolysis is rare, muscle-related symptoms can significantly affect quality of life and may necessitate a change in medication or dosage.

Liver Damage

Statins can cause an increase in liver enzymes, indicating potential liver damage. While this side effect is relatively rare and often reversible upon discontinuation of the medication, regular monitoring of liver function is recommended for individuals on long-term statin therapy. Severe liver damage is uncommon but can be a serious concern, necessitating close supervision by a healthcare provider.

Increased Risk of Diabetes

Long-term statin use has been linked to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Studies suggest that statins may impair insulin sensitivity and increase blood sugar levels. For individuals with prediabetes or other risk factors for diabetes, this side effect can be particularly concerning. Healthcare providers often weigh the cardiovascular benefits of statins against the potential risk of developing diabetes when prescribing these medications.

Cognitive Effects

There have been reports of memory loss, confusion, and other cognitive issues among statin users. While evidence is mixed and the exact relationship remains unclear, some studies suggest a potential link between statin use and cognitive decline. The FDA has acknowledged these reports and recommends that patients experiencing significant cognitive symptoms discuss these with their healthcare provider.

Peripheral neuropathy, characterized by tingling, numbness, or pain in the extremities, has been associated with long-term statin use. Although the mechanism is not fully understood, some researchers believe that statins may affect nerve cells. Patients experiencing symptoms of neuropathy should consult their healthcare provider, as an adjustment in therapy may be necessary.

Kidney Issues

While statins are not typically associated with significant kidney damage, there is evidence to suggest that high doses of certain statins might pose a risk, particularly when used in conjunction with other medications that affect the kidneys. Patients with pre-existing kidney conditions should be closely monitored during statin therapy.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Digestive issues, such as nausea, diarrhea, and constipation, can occur with statin use. Although these side effects are generally mild and tend to diminish over time, they can be bothersome for some individuals. In rare cases, more severe gastrointestinal conditions, such as pancreatitis, have been reported.

Tendon Problems

Some studies have reported an increased risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture among long-term statin users. The exact mechanism is unclear, but it is believed that statins may interfere with the production of collagen, an essential component of tendons. Individuals engaging in regular physical activity or those with pre-existing tendon issues should be aware of this potential risk.

While statins are effective in managing high cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of cardiovascular events, long-term use is associated with various potential side effects. Regular monitoring and open communication between patients and healthcare providers are essential to managing these risks. For many individuals, the benefits of statin therapy outweigh the potential drawbacks, but each case should be evaluated on an individual basis. Ongoing research continues to enhance our understanding of the long-term effects of statins, aiming to improve patient outcomes and safety.

Patients should never discontinue statin therapy without consulting their healthcare provider, as doing so can increase the risk of cardiovascular events. Instead, any concerns or side effects should be promptly discussed with a medical professional to find the most appropriate and safe treatment strategy.

  4. 21. Info from my mate in Surrey Police suggests that, as usual, the media either fails or refuses to tell the whole story. The cow, or calf, allegedly caused 3 road traffic collisions, and injured several pedestrians. The attempts by Police to capture the cow (no Meghan, I'm not talking about you), had taken several hours. The RSPCA refused to turn out as the animal was not being ill treated, and there were no specialist organisations or persons to assist, neither were there any firearms units available to sedate the animal. Following an alleged lack of leadership from control, the Police driver is said to have acted the way he did to prevent further traffic collisions and to precedent further injuries to the public. Of course, being a Police officer, he will be guilty unless he can prove his innocence. When the full story comes out, I wonder how many members of the media will give an impartial update?
