a.  Age and memory

Eventually we’re alone or die … nowt we can do … plus we deteriorate, think we need to face up to that. We need to make our arrangements but people like me are bad at that. Still … we must … always given that circumstances are about to change in this country … not as the scaremongers carry on about but still … they’re going to fall away. Everything in this place is modular, the rest is left behind.

The ability to reason, edit etc. is still ok, give or take, in my case … the memory less so and the danger is that droppers might see intent on my part in perhaps not including their piece here and there.  Hmmmm … that’s likely to be that the platform won’t allow, second reason sheer memory and moving st too fast a pace. My overall deterioration is another factor though I’m in reasonable overal nick, still physically scooting around, falling into walls.

My solution to the memory thing is to be organised … for example, the finished Strepsils pack sits near the meds box … constant reminder to phone and order … there are white plastic trays all over, each with a purpose. And that must never alter … no brilliant reorganisation ideas … nope, leave it as it is, don’t interfere. Do. Not. Interfere. With. The. Original. Plan.

b.  The Geelong Advertiser 

… plus the Liverpool Echo.  These are local rags at opposite ends of the globe and yet excellent litmus tests of how far Wokery has permeated local area. I’m not sure local rags ever reflected reality, except in local sports results, e.g. the U16 tiddlywinks challenge against Greater Bootle … things like that … or some lovely starting a modelling career etc.

I just saw the opportunity, once these went paywall, to still grab headlines now and then as an insight into local matters, as seen by some big city editor given her start in the workplace … The Echo’s going paywall now and it has a foreign woman as editor. This is the sort of thing:

1.  Man from the West Country one

JH: Just as an exercise, let’s do this (op ed “2c”) … I was asked how far I interfere with the “droppers’ text” in drops and the answer is … very little … they can answer this better than I. My additions are either JH plus whatever follows or in italics, as in top and bottom of the Ripper piece. Each of our droppers is reading this, so knows how far this is true or not. I wrote to a friend:

“That was Ripper’s text … my addition was in italics, top and bottom. There were one or two apostrophes and full stops (periods). That was all. You see, those boys are fiercely independent and brusque and would never abide my interference.”

That’s the editorial policy here but not at, say, Gates of Vienna in 2006, where Dymphna asked for my take on China, then promptly said she was an “editor”, meaning she reserved the right to chop and change a contributed article.  Those were my early, raw blogging days, plus fair dos but it warrnt a very good article to be sure, so no hard feelings. Plus she and I liked one another’s copy in general.

Finding that fine editorial line is a constant issue, as there’s the little matter of contracted conditions with the platform, plus changing legalities … I lack the budget of an Ian Hislop, so need to watch both that and to protect our droppers as well. I was more editorial with Wiggia when he “dropped” but that’s history.
