ReplyDeleteDuring his working life my dad never wore collared shirts, always a detachable starched collar, a clean collar every day, but a shirt would last a week before washing.
5. Because they were hard on the neck due to the starch. Also they got lost at the laundry. My grandfather heaved a sigh of relief when soft collars became the norm.

ReplyDelete9. Hmm. People stopped wearing vests, so shirts needed washing more frequently; washing machines meant standards of cleanliness went higher; cost of clothing declined so people could afford more shirts, not just collars; level of formality in dress for work in office jobs went down.
