    During his working life my dad never wore collared shirts, always a detachable starched collar, a clean collar every day, but a shirt would last a week before washing.

  5. 5. Because they were hard on the neck due to the starch. Also they got lost at the laundry. My grandfather heaved a sigh of relief when soft collars became the norm.
