It is a dump the best thing about Birmingham is thankfully leaving New Street station London is a close second.
My home town became a Birmingham overspill during the 70s and 80s. Most of those I got to know (and yes, most of those Brummies were/are good, honest and friendly...) said they left not so much because of better economic opportunities but because the massive influx of tinge was turning many parts of the city which they used to live and otherwise socially frequent into unsafe no-go areas. Apparently even back then some of the left-wing councils used to pander to the influx which resulted in marginalising the indigenous to the point of driving many of them away.
Since the offending tweet is three years old, it's pretty obvious that someone has timed its rediscovery to coincide with the conference. Also, Birmingham is a dump. It may be undiplomatic to say so when you're there, but that doesn't make the sentiment less true.
Several years ago I had to go on a business trip to Brum for a few days. I asked a coworker who already been what it was like. His reply was 'keep your car windows up and don't try to feed anything. And try not to leave your hotel.'
A few years back a friend was mugged and stabbed as he walked to collect his car in Brum, he nearly died, it is the very epitome of a shit'ole.
So I guess anyone who knows that Birmingham is a crime infested, 3rd world colonised dump isn't welcome in the Tory party. I wasn't thinking of joining anyway.
There it is. I've been there, it's pretty bad, but so are most British cities now.
