Housekeeping Friday-Saturday

22:41: Chaps and chapesses, we are now at the damage stage and a quick check shows it's 65 mph out there, which we've had before, except that this is a direct hit on my edge of the building, it's not the overall wind, it's that it's coming straight at my BT wire and could take it out, which means end of internet for the foreseeable.  I do have simple £5 mobile phone.

22:47: If I suddenly go offline, that's why.  We're about to lose our roof and the floor is rising and falling.  I'll keep typing while I can. [That was a bad one just now].  I'll keep typing, sort of live blogging.  It's not the overall wind strength, that's around 65 mph, it's both gusts and direction, the direction is ... er ... direct at my window where the telephone line comes in, not the power line.

22:52: Just been sleeping two hours, strangely, but some crashing and debris woke me up.  Blog header appropriate.  Was going to run the 'man on the end of the jetty' picture but thought that might be tempting fate.  Temperature's 4C [39F].  Going to change the header.  Hang on.

22:56:  Still here, seems little to no rain just now, quite common here when temp drops, it becomes sleet slightly lower than this.  Lights just flickered, so who knows what's going on elsewhere in the house on the other side?  There's a vulnerable powerline there and some wrenching sounds coming through the central walls, I'm not going out to look.

23:00:  I'd suggest any who want to write, if you need a reply, now's a good time.  As for health, pain down the right diode waist down gluteus, leg, not so much back at this mo.  Teeth, throat iffy but we'll see.  Time for some iced coffee.  I leave a big mug ready overnight, so it will be cold, that's usual at Higham Mansions.

23:08:  Steve just made a drop, ha ha - biz must go on.  Andy has too, shall check in a min.  Next door in RL seems to be taking a battering, Michael Fish, come back, all is forgiven.  Heating on in here but it's doing nothing, shall go get the dressing gown and furlined boots, usually for minus five situations.  If I can get there, ha ha, side is iffy.

23:27: PD drop, Toodles too.  Local news just said it was something called Storm Arwen.  We have a fellow tweeter named that. Just looked it up.  Apparently there's a storm supposed to 'rip through' the UK, well, whodathunkit?  [Faeces, a bad one just hit, good thing I'm not on the boat, eh?]  Probably good not to know earlier, got some good sleep in, coffee nice.

23:36: Self-centred of me - how are you going in your part of Britland?  Please report!  Power crew arrived in white van on the street.  Doesn't seem as bad down there, just up on this exposed hillside.  What fun.

23:47:  Amfortas and Woodsy drops.  What fun, lads.  AMFT - yep, Van Diemen's can get pretty wild down there, Shetland stuff.  Prayers please for the sea men and women, folks.  This island nation.  2 to 4 a.m. eh?  Charming, WDSY.  Let's have a song, two minutes from midnight:

00:03: Warrnt that fun?  That was Wilson Pickett style, laze and gem, hope you were all belting it out there.  Next track preparing now.  Just discovered it was mainly hitting my side windows, oblique to the phone line but full on the powerline.  Oh well.

00:21:  Yep, just looked at the weather map, there are two corridors heading SE - one between Liverpool and Manchester, another north-east down the coast, seems to miss idyllic Yorkshire.  Wind back to a dreamy 45-50 but pulled my back again.  Scots got it right in the face.  Oh dear. Closing off this first part, opening a second.  Nigh nigh all you early bedders.

  1. Stay safe James. Fill some hot water bottles, the old fashioned stone ones keep the warmth longer than the rubber ones.🙏

It hasn't hit us here yet, due sometime Saturday.

  2. By 'eck' tha lad. Sounds grim. I'fact sounds like Tassie in September when the Roaring Forties hits and the Antartctic sends all her best. Rug up warm like and batten down the hatches.

  3. Just keep your head down and stay safe. It's definitely bl**dy windy here and as noted an unusual direction so all sorts of new and unexpected bangs and howls are going on. Quite a few brief power cuts and flickers earlier and lightning flashes to watch. Lost the Internet for a while but it came back, and now a slight lull in wind speed, showtime forecast for higher winds again at 2-4am. If tomorrow's job is only hunt the wheely bins I will be surprised!
