[not happy, mr. cameron] lift your game, son

Gravy train on fire

The cost of [EU] membership will rise to £6.4bn - equivalent to about £260 per UK household - from £4.1bn in 2009/10. The Treasury said it was right for the UK "to share the burden of membership with new accession countries".

But the Tories say the rising bill is evidence of "Labour's incompetence" in the midst of a recession. In 2004, the figure was £53 per household.

Aside from the iniquity of the Big Three sharing the EU burden of all the other sponging nations who are clamouring to get in and be subsidized by us, there is that Tory comment. While the Labour incompetence is beyond question, the comment itself is pathetic.

The Tories should be up there making bold moves about our EU Referendum and getting us out of this mess and yet what do we find? Just a bit of party politics - fiddling while Rome burns. What this country wants of the next government is not a lame "oh how terrible are Labour" but firm proposals on how we intend tackling the massive debt and the EU yoke around our necks.

Not happy, Dave. You can do better than acting as a Blair clone. You're not there to do the Westminster jolly, mouthing cliche after cliche and grandstanding at PMQ. You're there to put proposals and hammer them home.

  1. I think Peter Hitchens (and others) are right: what's the difference betwen the parties? Now it's your turn, now it's mine, see you at the club.

  2. Wrong, Sir James. The Tories are doing exactly what they should be doing.

It is not the politician that needs changing. This is a type of government that will change the politician, experience shows. What is needed is something vastly different.

The parties are gamesters; but government keeps the table, and is sure to be the winner in the end--

You can only succeed as you remove government from a function, not as you correct a function in government. I am convinced there is no other progress to be made. That this may be utterly impossible does not make it untrue.

A conservative is someone who desires that things work, but what is left for him is to labor cluelessly and energetically for his masters to make the State work.

Tom Sawyer is painting Huck Finn's fence for him. And he is painting himself in.
