This country:
1. has a dependency - Clipperton Island;
2. has won the 4th most summer Olympic medals;
3. has the iris as its national flower;
4. gave the world denim;
5. had an author, who, in 1969, wrote a novel without the letter "e".
Clue for no points: The bikini was invented here.
Mmm! not sure on this one...
ReplyDeleteBTW I am loving your advent calender posts :-)
Any other takers? :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's la Republique Francaise, denim being short for 'serge de Nimes'.
ReplyDeleteThere are only two double landlocked - that is to say, completely surrounded by countries that are landlocked - countries in the world. Name either...
The only thing I got out of the clues was France...
ReplyDeleteFrance it was.
ReplyDeleteSerge de Nimes, which is not at all the same as blue jean, which came whence?
ReplyDeleteAs to double landlocked: Chad and Malawi?
William,
ReplyDeleteChad borders Libya, Sudan, Nigeria and Cameroon, all of which border the sea. Malawi borders Tanzania and Mozambique, which both border the Indian Ocean.
Any more guesses?
Double landlocked - Lichtenstein and Uzbekistan?
ReplyDeleteDenim from Nimes but blue jeans from Chieri?
It is Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan, according to wiseGEEK, but Uzbekistan is bordered by Kazakhstan and Turkemistan, both of which border the Caspian Sea. I know that the Caspian Sea is landlocked, and so technically a huge lake, but it isn't enclosed by a single state and it isn't itself land, it's water. So I don't think Uzbekistan counts.
ReplyDeleteThat should have read Turkmenistan, not 'Turkemistan', of course.
