[tri-nations] three losses

Now I wonder if the Scottish bloggers would have run the photo if the result had been different? Do they also have a magnificent sense of fair play?

France

President Nicolas Sarkozy's ruling UMP conservative party is trailing in the first round of French local elections. However, the socialists' lead is smaller than some predicted, and the outcome in some large cities in particular remains finely balanced.

Spain

With nearly all the votes counted, the Socialists had won 169 seats, short of the 176 needed for an absolute parliamentary majority.

Disunited Kingdom

We've played pish all this tournament but it seriously wouldn't matter if we didn't win another game again because today we trampled the English - well that is of course until next time we play the English, then we'd better win there too.

National differences are alive and well, I see. Interesting how a Scot can be induced to say the words England or English under certain conjunctions of circumstances. :)

I was at a Rugby dinner once on the same day England played Scotland at Murrayfield so naturally we watched it. The instant the Scots turned out onto the park, it was as clear as day who was going to win - there was a mania in the Scots' eyes, quite different to the grim determination of the English.

  1. Why would I want to post a picture of the English team celebrating a win? I would not be celebrating with them.

There is nothing wrong in celebrating your teams victory, James. Especially when the team you are playing is an old sporting rival. Particularly if that rival usually wipes the pitch clean with you.

  2. Nothing quite like beating the English especially if you are significant underdogs, which is certainly true of the Scottish Rugby Team. Scottish sports teams rise to the big occasion and there is nothing bigger than a chance to smash the Auld Enemy. My brother normally takes the train, but he drove so that he didn't have to listen to smug Englishmen when the English smashed us off the park. In the end, I suspect that he got drunk and drove home the next day.

  3. 'As long as we beat the English ...' I'm afraid it's true of all the Celtic nations.

  4. I love the Celtic content on this blog - Bryan Appleyard calls me vaguely Celtic, green.

    Wistful, to be sure today.

    I agree.

James, I think you'd have enjoyed being here on Saturday (except for the result of course!) I went to my local around noon and it was packed. 60% Scots, 30% English, 5% Welsh and 5% Irish. All were mixing together, buying each other pints and generally being very sociable.

There were still some English supporters being welcomed in my local tonight when I called in on the way home from work.

Much more extraordinary this evening: some Rangers and Celtic fans were getting very pissed and singing together. However, when "Only the Best" (the Rangers song) came on the jukebox the senior Celtic fan made his excuses and went out for a cigarette...

  6. Would have been good and a couple of pints afterwards perhaps?
