[chainsaw massacre] this time in britain

Do only Ents look after trees?

Matt Wardman has a horrifying piece about local councils across Britain tree lopping and felling. It reminds me of Lord of the Rings and the mad Saruman's uprooting of trees. We need some Ents now, to stop the murderous foe. Matt reports:

Councils across Britain have embarked on what environmentalists have called a “chainsaw massacre”.

Why? Who is deciding these things?

Trees are coming down as a Health and Safety risk (”trip hazard”), or being replaced by “lollipops”.

Who specifically has given these orders and is that person a horticulturalist?

And trees that will take 50 years to regrow are being removed without thought being given to long term consequences.

Don't the idiots understand that trees aren't just trees - they are an ecosystem for birds, for us? No, they don't understand that, do they?

Bureauman sits in his office and gets a great idea - let's lop down the trees. Or else he gets a directive from above.

I find it highly surprising that in an age of “Environmental Friendliness”, and at a time when birds are under threat, that this is even possible. This state of affairs is unacceptable under Environmental Policy - never mind Tree Policy.

The thing is, Matt, we need a Tree Policy and fast. The blogosphere is good at petitions and campaigns. I wonder what can be done about this atrocity?

  1. They need to have more conservation orders on trees.Part of our farmis a 7 acre wooded lot and we are not allowed to remove more than 1/4 of them, which bis only right. Even though they are mainly chestnut and I hate chestnuts.
    I would sign a petition.

  2. This is a true environmental issue as trees are vital to the formation of the levels of oxygen on the planet. We are not growing any more land, and as we encroach further and further into the forest it is destroying not only NECESSARY beauty, but the air we breathe.

Start a rant, get a petition. Let me know and I will sign.

  3. Well said this has been covered before and needs to be covered again and again.

Local councils really have not got a clue, they cut down tree on 'elf n safety grounds.

Then another part of that same bloody inept council claims that they are pro green, how exactly can they work that having chain sawed half the trees?

Finally you here them whitter on about how 4X4 are damaging the environment, although is that as much as council employees armed with chainsaws?

Bastards - I would say we need a long rope and a tree to resolve the problem, alas the tree has been cut down.

  4. Alas the tree has been cut down. Too true.

OK, how to do this as I'm not in Britain now [expat], so it seems as if we need a petition which can go up and down the country.

    How are these things organized?

  5. I agree. It's insane . I bought my house in Cardiff new in 1984 and a tree had been put in every garden. I was told these were "protected" trees and you weren't allowed to cut them down - not that I wanted to. But the first thing most people did when they moved in was have their trees cut down. Nothing was ever said or done about it. Later, when the Cardiff Bay bunch started mucking around with the environment in the area and turning it, on their own admission, into an "urban wetland" all the rowan trees suddenly died. No one investifated. Yes, start a petition.
