[bag's lament] sorry for eating you

Bag read this:

The descendants of cannibals in Papua New Guinea, who killed and ate four Fijian missionaries in 1878, have said sorry for their forefathers' actions.

And wrote this:

Of course it then works out that a British ancestor revenged the killings by killing several tribesmen and torching some villages. Wonder if we are expected to apologise back? It's only polite you know.

Now, I wonder if we could get Welshcakes to whip up something to go with it? Prune Consomme?

  1. "So, what's for dinner?" asks the gentleman.
Smiling, the woman replies, " You are."
But what do you expect when you go to Cannibal Cafe?

  3. Is all this apologising a bit silly? Sorry that my ancestors ate yours, sorry that my ancestors mistreated yours, sorry that my ancestors believed what they were doing was okay ...

I'm not sure I can see the point of it.

  5. This apologising business is stupid.

Nobody who was involved in this is alive.
We are not to blame for the actions of our ancestors any more than we deserve the results of their success.

Hereditary monarchy is daft in modern times, because the merits of one's ancestor are no way to choose the head of an executive.
The talents of Louis XIV didn't make Louis XVI talented.

And the actions of our ancestors in no way make us responsible for them.

Of course, neither does it mean we have the right to think ourselves more deserving to live a life of luxury created by their actions, when others were not so fortunate in their choice of ancestors...

  6. choice of ancestors... Interesting words I didn't realise that I had chosen mine. but what I want to do with my wealth is up to me not some beurocrat who thinks they can steal it.

I'm seeing this as a drive towards removing all aggression from our species and making us all as placid and easy to manipulate. Like lambs to the slaughter.

  7. Bag- my point, we DIDN'T choose our ancestors.

We are not to blame for their actions.

But by the same token, we should recognise when we live well at someone else's expense as a result o their actions.
