[pensive friday] nice surprise last night

Two incidents almost made me quit blogging in the early days, last August.

The first was when I accidentally came upon, I think, The Englishman's sitemeter and it registered 625 unique visitors and 34 in the last hour and it was still lunchtime. Maybe it was Monty Lionheart's - I can't remember.

The second was visiting one American teenager's site and the posts read like a bad rap song. He hadn't even bothered to do anything other than grab the base Minima, he'd been blogging for one month and his visible counter showed he was pulling in about 1200 hits a day.

This was mortifying. The Englishman, at least, was a fine blog.

Chris Dillow, Tim Worstall, Stephen Pollard, Oliver Kamm, Clive Davis, the now entitled Cleanthes [The Select], Euroserf and Johnathan Pearce of Samizdata set me on the right path and this explains my penchant for those sites.

Yes, this is Oliver Kamm of recent fame, who is actually a thorough gentleman and clearly had an agenda for his recent comments.

Then came Blogpower and a new world opened but last night took the biscuit. Helped greatly by the guest bloggers, I've never seen visitors in such numbers as last evening.

Don't know what to add to that really.

  1. I found the "Civility Enforced" proposal far more frightening and far more depressing (if you can experience fear and depression at the same time). In terms of blogging stats mine are still frankly pathetic but I don't mind that, I don't want too much attention and I'm quite happy just to post what I want how I want - which brings me back to my first point.

  2. Chin up old chap! Don't take too much notice of the stats - they are always wrong just take them as an indication. And the reason I get lots of visitors is that I have thousands of posts on my site from the last few years and they show up in Google searches - so for instance my last three visitors are referred to my site by:
    http://www.google.co.uk/ - "came forth sweetness"
    http://images.google.co.uk/- "emma b"
    http://www.google.com/ "Marc C. Johnson"

So nothing there because of my insightful writing on the issues today!

(I leave my stats open to view unlike other bloggers because "why not".)

  3. James, If you are concerned with the size of yours then it does no good looking at others. There are bound to be others better than you. Remember even Bill Gates is out touting for business.

It must be me but I've never really been interested in the stats. I blog to get a message across. One voice in a choir. A choir that can't sing but the thought is there.

The Englishmans blog seems to be doing really well lately and a daily read for me same as yours.

The rappers blog should really be the one that puts your mind at rest. Stats are not always related to anything.

Maybe you just need a few photographs of tasty women with their tits out to get your stats buzzing. Appealling to the Emma B bunch the Englishman gets but, please, please, ignore the bloke, whoever he is.

  4. That thing about our dear Englishman was a reference to earlier and not a current commentary.

I'm more than happy with thing s just now and have to keep offering good stuff if I can.

I'm more concerned with the Tin Drummer's Civility Enforced issue. We have to stop these prats.

  5. Bag, i presume you mean ignore the rapper. The Englishman is one fine person - "good people" indeed, as the Americans would say.

  6. Well, I'm glad you didn't stop, James! I must admit I do have days when I'm depressed about the stats but then someone writes a nice comment and that bucks me up. I sometimes feel low and stupid because I haven't got loads of banners and things in the sidebar like you, tp and others. That's mostly because I'm scared to try putting some there! Thanks for introducing me to the Englishman's blog.

  7. The englishman sounds a true gent and is glad, I'm glad you didn't give up either. I know how hard you work at Blogpower, just be assured that it is much appreciated.

  8. Quality over quantity, James :)

    Your blog is very appreciated.

Also, it's somewhat unrelated, but that is the SWEETEST little baby! So precious!

  9. If I was worried about the stats, I'd not only have to quit, I think I'd owe money :(

Still waiting on those emails James ><

  10. James, Yes I meant ignore the rapper's stats. One of the things I find funny about the internet is when you say 'This is the biggest load of tripe I have ever read' then you provide a link and that guy gets a bonus from the people going to have a look. He then thinks he is doing the right thing. With hard copy that people pay for you can see what people are willing to shell out for. Stats have a different meaning then.

My comment was more of a general one rather than aimed at yourself. With Blogpower you must be pulling in quite a few hits now. I was just commenting on the fact that if you are worried about something looking aound at others does not help because we look at those we like and have visitors like us. Going there to check on the stats helps their stats. And one thing that seems to get the hits is a nice piccy of a lady showing her charms. Forget political discussion. So what does that tell you?

  11. It tells me that you're an astute blogger, Bag.
