Tuesday [15 till close of play]

(1730) Evening all.

20.  Ian P on ABBA

‘The Beatles will be remembered long after Abba have been forgotten.’

It was an assertion with which it would have been hard to argue.  It was the late 1970s and Abba were at the height of their popularity, but the point was made that The Beatles were a cultural phenomenon while Abba were just a pop group.

“Major David Somers (Howard) is fired from his job of secret agent, and since you can't put secret agent on your resume you'd think he'd have a hard time getting a job because of the gap in said resume. But he finds something just perfect for him. It's a job on a country estate cataloging butterflies in a collection.

He wanted something quiet, away from the rough and tumble of city life - oh boy was he ever wrong.

The man of the house is a middle aged milquetoast, and his wife is trying to fight off middle age with an affair with a laborer on the estate who is a hideous human being half her age. He better enjoy his youth because his muscles are all he has going for himself.

The Fentons have a niece, Sophie (Simmons), who "gets muddled" because she found her parents' murdered bodies as a childand she has been troubled ever since. And for some reason her aunt is trying to gaslight her. And then one night the laborer is found murdered and all evidence points to Sophie.

Now Somers has been an onlooker in all of this except for one big thing -he has fallen in love with Sophie.

This is hard to swallow. Sophie is half Somers' age, looks it, plus she has been isolated on her aunt and uncle's estate since childhood, so what could she know of love? Somers, allegedly a man of the world, never stops to think about this or the fact that maybe Sophie DID kill the laborer when he sneaks out of the house with her in the middle of the night and they decide to make a run for another country.

So most of the film is the chase, Somers and his formerly discredited powers of allusion against the police trying to find them. This would get boring if it wasn't for the fact that Howard, as Somers, seems to be having such a good time winning his good name back by sidestepping every police barricade and trap, and Simmons as the enigmatic Sophie, seems more and more like somebody who could have done the crime after all.

I'd mildly recommend it.”

My notes

Oh dear, I’ve seriously been trying to avoid two themes like the plague … cheating wife (or cheating hubby) … and May-Decembers, designed to cast the starlet with the aging icon of cinema. Films in this era, to my mind, did this way too often and I don’t wish to be reminded.

Seems we have one on our hands here … I was rushing to get a film posted.

I'm not a political activist, I'm not a journalist.
I'm a 66 year old woman of reasonable standing who managed to buy nice houses, cars and holidays , have a social life and fund my own existence , without being a burden on The tax payer or even being remotely concerned, who was in power and what they were up to. Times have changed.
Now governments blue or red are only capable of thinking up tax scams and fines to take away what ordinary people have built up.
The working/ retired middle class is their target, that's probably YOU, it's definitely me. They haven't got the common sense or imagination to make the country strong again. So they've decided to weaken it.
To squeeze every last drop of disposable income out of the sentient beings on this tax farm... namely us, the public.
Their stupidity fuelled by greed and a desire to be a world player sicken me to the core. So I do what I can to explain in easy terms just what they're capable of and why it's clear they have no empathy and moral compassion, for the people living in the here and now.

Bat shit crazy biased science provided by government funded sources or even worse , billionaire wannabe Gods with squeaky voices and no more qualifications than me, are the wrong path to follow.
So, I resist. I use my social media to help others to do the same.
We are winning, we have resisted so much that should have been in play by now but isn't. The control cabal have suffered from premature ejaculation with their dehumanising agenda, treating us like cattle, well it didn't work in The UK.
We DO NOT have a health passport We ARE NOT all vaccinated We DO NOT trust the media
Time is now on our side, Sadly more health issues mean more questions asked More families aware More doctors waking up More MPs waking up. Their power grab is waning, resistance is growing.
There's no finish line, no victory speech, just a quiet resistance from people you will never meet who have simply had enough.

Part of his tweet … remind you of anywhere else in the world?  Potholes?

Dan Andrews' legacy will not be limited to that of a democracy destroying dictator. The price of their disastrous debt accumulation will be felt for generations to come. Victoria is Australia’s most indebted state. The state is projected to have $247.2 billion of debt by 2027, up from $55.2 billion in 2019. Victoria’s public sector has grown by 59% in the last 15 years, easily exceeding population growth. The state’s poor budgetary position is attributed to wasteful “Big Build” infrastructure projects, such as the North-East Link and the Suburban Rail Loop, alongside excessive spending on bureaucrats. Victoria’s public service pay bill increased by 152% over the same 15 year period, the nation’s largest increase. The state government also spent $589 million on the cancelled Commonwealth Games without any benefit. Former federal Treasury official Stephen Anthony has warned that heavily indebted Victoria could require a federal “bailout”. “Victoria is on a suicide mission to record borrowing, just as global interest rates are about to hit 5%”, Anthony said. “Potholes can’t get filled, emergency departments can’t afford clean linen, primary schools can’t fix heaters”. “Things are about to get very ugly”, he said.”

Holy Grail reaction

There are sooooo many thing need saying in this reaction to the Python movie.

Firstly, you might have been on the Planet Zog at the time, you might not know to what that expression is a reference, you might not have seen the filum, you might not have wanted to ... big deal, I've never seen any Harry Potter ... ever ... but I do know about it ... it's difficult enough to follow without the following obstacles:

Yes, it does not translate to the small screen but then the copyright holder, as interpreted by youtube, cut huge chunks out, destroying context, before we even see it ... we can't see the filum itself because of copyright claim ... it's a mess ... on purpose.

Then the reaction is by a girl, seems an early zoomer, whose life till now has been what the MSM and soc-med have told us it is ... but she gives enough away for us to know she seems a bit normal if know nothing. Not her fault ... it's parents and teachers, plus dire influences, e.g. current film and music etc. etc. etc.

Then she's female, where most of you lot are male, of a different culture altogether ... though you remember your childhood.

At this point, this youtube recommended starts making sense to me to run in this slot. Now, I'm 14:57 into 51:16 and am not sure I can go any further because firstly, they or she are chopping almost every punchline, joke denouement or key to the action out. Yes, I know the film off by heart and know those punchlines but it's still highly frustrating.

Secondly ... she's probably a lovely gal but at any second, she puts an "oval framed her" in the centre, blocking out most of the action ... even if you like her ... that's a pain in the backside for her to suddenly appear out of any context.

So I had to stop and inflict it upon you, dear reader ... coz that's the kinda guy I am ... plus I have no Jago nor Ruairidh at the ready.

See how much you can take.

The reason for the changed order today is chronological. Two or three worrying things on the home front had me taking things as they arose and MftWC was better as first read, (second) last posted (just today). There are personal matters just now shan’t bore you with.

One though I shall, by responding to Toodles’s post … or part of it:

Thing is, we have no idea and security-wise, that’s best for all, inc. Digger. It could be absolutely anything, from frustration to medical to security … better not to speculate, though it hurts N.O. too. Little prayers now and then it’s nothing dire.

a) Edouard Balladur - ex-Premier Minister speaks-out regarding the Constitutional Court's decision to reject a referendum.

[DAD - The Court says that we can't give 'the people' the final decision - they might give the the 'wrong answer' - i.e. not our decision.]

"With regard to immigration regulations, it is up to France to decide sovereignly who is competent to do so. It can only be the French people, the exclusive author of our institutions. In this matter, there is no legitimacy other than its own. The decision comes back to the referendum in order to modify the Constitution and specify the powers of each person".

"We must return the Constitutional Council to its natural competence, and also bring back the various national, European or international institutions which arrogate to themselves the right to create new European law by interpreting the treaties as they wish with the effect if not sometimes the goal the weakening of French sovereignty".

"These are the Council of State, the Constitutional Council, the Court of Cassation, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union".

b) Having left to spread the “good word” to Moroccans residing in Europe, they never returned to the Kingdom. Thirteen imams, sent to France, Belgium and Germany by the Moroccan Ministry of Religious Affairs for the month of Ramadan “disappeared into thin air” upon their return to the country.

They hold a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree or even a doctorate. They are paid monthly by the Moroccan state to work in their mosque and benefited from a round trip, all expenses paid, to Europe to lead Ramadan prayers there.

c) Media paints French Right-Wing Leader’s self-defence as assault on woman.

While visiting Corsica as part of the campaign for the European elections, Reconquête party leader Éric Zemmour was attacked during a visit to a market on the island. Greeted with insults and egg-throwing, he defended himself against a woman who targeted him, fuelling accusations from the press of violence on his part.

The incident took place on the market in Ajaccio, the regional capital of Corsica. The president of Reconquête, who had come to campaign with his activists, was greeted with cries of “fascist” and “racist piece of [expletive],” and was targeted by opponents who threw eggs in his face. Reacting instinctively to a woman’s attack coming from behind, he made a defensive gesture towards her.

d) The Home Office loses at least 21,000 asylum seekers in five years - and the true figure could be far higher.

Figures obtained from the Home Office show that officials have been unable to locate at least 21,107 foreign nationals who claimed to be refugees.

The vast majority of those who have disappeared have no right to remain in the UK because their claims have been refused or withdrawn – and the true figure will be far higher as the data covers only the five years up to September 2023.

Monday [11 until close of play]

... but including a quiz at some point … pls bear with me while I explain. Whatever plans I had, someone close to me has had a major issue and I’m fairly much on call if required. One of the plans was the quiz, so we’ll still do it, a bit later, in order to vaguely keep to the weekly plan … baroque tomorrow and that sort of thing.

What I’m saying is that the more we’re dislocated and thrown off kilter, the more we should scramble back to our routine afap. The ones who need to stay most on track are redactors, call centre people, those who take in and send out … it might seem cold and uncaring but I’m saying it helps to know at least something is going on as usual.

Vaguely. It’s 16:49 just now.

All right, why must it be English? Because this 👇🏻 is still available, one of my all time faves:

Part of a review

(This) is an impressive political thriller with an unusually specific and scary viewpoint. It posits that many conspiracies work because relatively few people are in on the whole joke; some are involved in the set up, some in the telling, and some in the punchline, but only a precious few are given the whole picture, making detection almost impossible. The argument is compellingly made.
