27.  Wind shadow

This is one I should have realised and remembered but I just never thought of it:

The more wind turbines we have, the more useless they are ... there goes those plans to cover the continental shelf with talismen to the Wind Gods.

New research shows wind turbines off the East Coast of the US could end up stealing as much as a third of the energy from other wind turbines downstream. And in some conditions, the turbulent wake they leave might stretch out 55 kilometers behind them. This effect is worst on turbines in the same “farm” but could even affect other wind farms a long way off.

The wake effect will be strongest in summer.

Back in the racing under sail days, blanketing your opponents was how everyone operated. To pass another boat, you had the right to leeward to force him up into the wind, into irons, but the downside was the wind shadow ... and unless you went at that leeward slot like a bull at a gate, you'd be caught in the shadow and the rules stated that you could not make that manoeuvre until your bow was level with or ahead of the halfway point along his boat.

In other words, should you charge into the shadow and fail to reach that halfway point, due to shadow, you'd wallow there, powerless, whilst the boat behind you tried to come through below you.

Right, back to the wind turbines ... I did not remember wind shadow but plead that it was a long time ago. What do the turbine engineers plead? Why has no engineer, seemingly, raised the question before? Let alone its maintenance costs?

Sigh… YouGov is not reliable evidence of anything. If a YouGov poll told us that the sun rises in the east, I’d feel obliged to get up at dawn to check for myself. YouGov is a self-selecting sample, so tainted from the outset. It tells us nothing. And how many times have the pollsters got it horribly wrong come the day of the poll that matters? These people get it wrong time after time. People lie to them. People refuse to speak to them and people refrain from telling them their preferences because they don’t want to be judged.

Some might already know I used to be sent YouGov polls ... once they knew I'd be voting Kipper though ... that was the last I saw of them.

... is going to die or even get more than mild symptoms but there are vulnerable people, susceptible, with a variety of conditions, of which old age is but one. I converse with many and tales abound ... the issue is not primarily, at this moment, the percentage of everyone having the shot but that they knew the risks and failed to speak or act.

I had a phone call from an NHS lady back near the start of it all, urging me, per script, to get jabbed and I stalled for time. She asked if she could write me as "hesitant".  "Yes." 

"Is it the clots?"

That is what she asked. That had already arisen as a complaint in her phoning about.
