I could tell you now they would nitpick that it has not passed yet, there may be amendments yada yada … doesn’t alter the issue. All the above establishes is that there’s an issue. … around the issue of “fair play” as soc-med pundits. In short, how much store can be placed by what’s presented?
a. My first note is about sheer volume, the torrent of issues flooding in.
“We” are not an online news room, though even one of those use syndication for fast “grabs”, just as our readers use N.O. and their daily roundups as story and issue indicators. “We” have certainly gone beyond the days of Tom’s comment that if you don’t like an N.O. post, it’s like the Scottish weather … just wait five minutes (About the main author => Others say). The sheer number of issues now threatens to overwhelm.
b. Second is … who are this “we”?
This is the beauty of soc-med and why Trudeau (Wed 2), Elon and his “Community notes” come heavily into play. Elon does it to cover himself, as he should … any stated “fact” here can and has been challenged. If the challenge is bollox, it’s challenged, if not, it’s just left be.
What has changed at N.O., from bitter experience, is that the admin owes it to commenters to protect them from nasties, inc. bots and trolls afap. Moderation is a pain for all but if I’m up front about shutting out the Wokery, it really does narrow the sheer flow of guff incoming. After that are our own differences.
There’s no registering here but at the same time there are regulars … and non-regulars are expected to show their own bona fides through the nature of their ongoing commenting, inc. using a moniker most of us then associate with that person.
A good example in general is Trudeau’s new C-63 bill on Online Harm … or retrospective prosecution for disagreeing with the govt. or govt faves (Wed 2). I’ll deal with that above.
Who is “we”? It’s regulars or occasionals we know for their content who do modify our stand on matters … that’s a very fluid definition, innit? Better that way imho.
The best analogy I could think of comes from a series of pictures, my and your comments … that of us being here a pub or tavern at a crossroads, near an onshore lighthouse beacon … I’m the publican, landlord or keeper, general dogsbody … you are patrons of the place, some far more frequent and necessary to the character of said place … in fact, you and I give the place its character, however much the keeper has the last word on moderation.
The whole key is that if you feel your view is more or less represented, give or take, you’ll return … just human nature. So it’s in my interest to use an ultralight touch afap, spelling and grammar aside in the main text.
Last thing on this is let’s not dwell, wasting time on bunfights, often troll induced … what we’ve said stays there in print, onto the next topic. Our prime directive here is to cover as much news as poss, aggregating fast, providing ways of taking it more in depth if you wish. Use the site search engine (sidebar, halfway down) copiously. I do all the time.
