LCVP Higgins boats

    Ours was the LCA (Landing Craft Assault) and my own family involvement is something to be proud of as both my Mum's older brother worked on them, and my Mum's younger sister married a man who worked on them. Both were apprentices during the war, the former marine electrical and the latter yacht building. Local yards in Poole were sub-contracted by Thornycroft Ltd to build LCA's for the Normandy Landings - though they wouldn't have known that at the time.

    Something I didn't know is LCA's put US Army Rangers ashore at Pointe du Hoc (Omaha Beach) on D-Day. In the film Saving Private Ryan the craft you see landing Rangers are LCVP Mk.2's which were built by the Dorset Yacht Company at Poole in the 1960's. These were used in the Falklands War and as a serving member of 3 Commando Brigade I have not so fond memories of time spent in them in rough seas. Quite some history:
