Dearieme, your comment made me think so I did a bit of research. I am aware of many old and abandoned brickworks in Bedfordshire just north of me, so I started there. I found this informative pdf on the history of the London Brick Company and the different types of brick produced. Indeed most of the bricks are more yellowish than red, there is an image of the various styles in the pdf.
