The ancient curse

The very first question I must address in this post, given the mindset of the readership, is, “What does it matter anyway?”

Well that very much depends from which angle you’re coming.  If sucked into the post-enlightenment rationalist, ‘science is god’ thing, which is this half-century’s hegemony, dismissing all else as superstition, then the answer is probably, “Not a lot.”  Good luck with that in these current times.

If, however, you do buy, not from preachers but from extensive reading, particularly historical sources from Egyptian to Persian and those geographically inbetween, then there are certain recurring themes.

One is that the cradle of civilisation for us - not sure how China fits into it nor the red indians - is greater Mesopotamia, from Egypt, down into Africa, across two rivers into Persia.  And a recurring theme is there was a Great Fall of some kind.  Whether allegorical or straight, I do buy that the ruling families today jealously guard their bloodlines for a very good (or bad) reason.

There was certainly some sort of wipeout event or two, e.g. a flood, there was constant corruption of strong structures, e.g. the dividing and wrecking of the twelve tribes.  Turning to eschatology, there do seem motifs, e.g. the march westwards of vast numbers from the east, the arising of an all conquering army from the west, under the guise of the Messiah returned, the ten northern nations reappearing and heading for ground zero and so on.

Looking back at that critical split between Judah and Israel, Assyria, the Babylonian Captivity, Vox has things to say, leading to other things:
