Universal Studios fire

What gives with this 2008 fire?  If you look at the Wiki article, scroll down to the list of artists the NYT says were affected.

There are many questions.  One of mine is why would so many artists have archives of masters there, all in that one place?  Why also were the buildings so vulnerable?  Also why not controlled demolition [just ignore that last one].

UMG controls 25.5% of the market share. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of French company Vivendi; Universal Studios, the movie studio, was sold in part to NBC, which itself is part of GE.
