I’ve a weird way of doing it, based on the boat building. It involved as far as possible not doing any calculation consciously but think of it as my tape measure. I know it is actually a series of calculations but I don’t consciously think of operations, just say to myself sixty fifteen. Sixty is five feet, plus fifteen more inches. Takes a second.
There's one tape measure trick I use sometimes that the guy in the video doesn't mention - say you have a plank of wood, 12.5 inches wide, and you need to cut it into 5 lengths of equal width.
Place the tape across the plank diagonally, so that the tape reads a width easily divisible by 5, say 20 inches, and mark off every 4 inches.
That's how I did it. Talking of maths how are we all with 6th Degree Polynomials? Me neither but a certain gentleman called Frank found them lurking in the data generated by the 2020 US election. Algorithms at work, stealing votes:

Then again, she was told by a nurse that at 75, she should still be working and that she didn't need a pacemaker but to be stuffed full of blood thinners.
Given that that remark wasn't based upon anything remotely scientific (e.g. a blood test), I wish I was there to say 'show your working'.
30+47-2
ReplyDeleteI would add 28 to 7, then add 40

I think I prefer another sequence;
ReplyDelete28 + 40 + 7.

ReplyDeleteI tend to use my tape measure as a quick calculator too.

2+4=6
ReplyDelete.8+.7=1.5
6+1.5=7.5
Remove decimal point
30+50-5
ReplyDeleteAdd 1st column = 60
ReplyDeleteAdd 2nd column = 15
= 75

8+47 = 55 + 20 = 75.
ReplyDeleteWhat my ma would refer to as 'The ploughman's method'

20+47+8, took but the blink of an eye.
ReplyDelete28 + 7 = 35. Add 40 = 75.
