Yorkshire Dales limeworks

Tales of Hoffman, courtesy of Rossa’s mother:

Once an industrial site with “grim” working conditions, the former Langcliffe Quarry and Craven Limeworks near Settle has been quiet for decades and reclaimed by nature.   Major re-development work is now underway and expected to attract business back.   A planning application brought by Craven District Council was approved on 25 January (follow the link to get the full details of the plans). Our Media Officer Andrew Fagg met Senior Historic Environment Officer Miles Johnson to get the story.

  1. All working conditions were grim both before, during and after the industrial revolution. But always remember the alternative was worse.
We judge the past by our standards.
Watched a British Transport Film about Hull dock workings in 1949, courtesy of Talking Pictures.
Now that looks grim, but the dockers were a privileged class.
In the 60s I worked in "grim" conditions. Hard physical work, no workwear provided, no subsidised canteen. but I enjoyed it. The camaradery, the banter, the constant flirting of bawdy women.
