[political comedy] the only way out perhaps

One of the key elements missing from political debate today is surely humour. If we can't stop this government by argument or by lawsuit, perhaps we can try ridicule. Let's bring back Spitting Image.

Incidentally, can you imagine a show like that in Italy with Silver Silvio the target? Would Gordo allow it today? At least this one is still going:

  1. Ian Hislop looks almost exactly the same then as now, 15 years on.

  2. Haha, I loved that second one! The second to last headline, even though it looked like Chinese Hanzi (I study Chinese too, Mandarin), there was one character that didn't fit it. I'm betting it was Japanese. That tub of lard was great!

  3. There's evidence that the decision to paint John Major as the greyman was on factor in his demise.

  4. The problem is that lefties control most of the TV channels so you're not going to get anything that cuts to the bone.

  5. THe Grey Man image was biting, be it Spitting Image or Steve Bell's Grey Man of Ditchling. There's not enough political satire on tv as there is decent comedy but that is probably less due to lefties in the BBC (although there is cultural liberal bias)than a general overall reduction of quality as it continues to compete with cable, satellite tv etc as well as its usual rival ITV
