[great flatterers] who was the worst

Wonderful and distinguished readers - who were, in your esteemed opinion, the worst three flatterers of all time?

1. Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli

2. James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck

3. Dr John H. Watson

4. King Canute's courtiers

5. Hazel Anne Blears, member for Salford

6. Martin Van Buren, 8th President

7. Edward Gibbon

8. Heinrich Himmler

9. Condoleeza Rice

10. [Insert name here]

If you can spare a few seconds of your extremely valuable time, please select your three worst, if it's not too much trouble.

  1. I put Hazel Blairs at number one, finding anyone else close is hard, but Boswell, yes- then how about the gentleman in your earlier post?

  2. I'd say Machiavelli, Boswell and Canute's courtiers out of that lot. I'd want to add Benjamin Disraeli, for "We authors, ma'am..." and all that.

  3. Blears at one, Crushed? Agreed.

Disraeli, WCL? I'd forgotten about poor old Gladstone and him. I'd have voted for him but still - it was pretty sickening.

Didn't he say something about when flattering royalty, to lay it on with a trowel?
