[mid week thoughts] on slavery and freedom

At this time of abject apology for past slavery, isn't it more appropriate to look first to the present?

In any consumer society, there are inevitably two kinds of slaves: the prisoners of addiction and the prisoners of envy. [Ivan Illich, 1973]

It behoves us to break the shackles of both and take the first faltering step towards freedom and happiness. [James Higham, 2007]

  1. Indeed, James. More meaningful than words would be a determination on the part of world leaders, church leaders, politicians, you and me, to seek an end to the traffiking of children and young people as sex slaves.

But don't you think that the prisoners of addiction need to take the first steps to freedom themselves: to recognise the addiction and to want to be free of it?

  2. Liz, what you say about addicts is so very true, no one can help them untill they are ready to help themselves...
