[highway patrol] curbing speeding or making money

Colin Campbell has a piece which might just make you chuckle, on how four young men in Australia had a scam going, causing the traffic police to send speeding fines to themselves. Now the law-abiding amongst you will see this as outrageous, as you will no doubt feel about radar detectors and the like, almost mandatory over here where we live. The question which seriously needs answering is whether the efforts of the police are for the curbing of speeding and thereby saving lives or whether it’s all about creating revenue.

  1. There can be no doubt: speed cameras are often placed not where there is a risk to pedestrians but where there is a high likelihood that the speed limit is too low.

The police have, for some time now, been clearly guilty of targetting those who are easy to catch (motorists, those protesting peacefully in Parliament Square) while ignoring those who are more difficult (vandals, muggers).

  2. If one believes that a speed limit is set too low then campaign for it to be changed. In the meantime motorists should adhere to the current limit or face the consequences without complaint.
We are a nation of speeders. Whatever limit is set I believe that it will be exceeded. There are environmental consequences to speeding and not only safety to take into account these days.
I am a motorist and I respect the limits. I will not complain if I am fined for breaking the law and I do not expect others to either.
