[crash] e-mail problems continue

It has not been a good day. Unfortunately, all is not well and my reinstallation of The Bat allows me to send out e-mails but not to receive them. The password gets in the way and I’ve tried everything to remove it. So for now, should you perhaps wish to send an e-mail to me, try this:

[kashrut] how kosher are you

1. Certain animals may not be eaten at all. This restriction includes the flesh, organs, eggs and milk of the forbidden animals. 2. Of the animals that may be eaten, the birds and mammals must be killed in accordance with Jewish law. 3. All blood must be drained from the meat or broiled out of it before it is eaten. 4. Certain parts of permitted animals may not be eaten. 5. Meat [the flesh of birds and mammals] cannot be eaten with dairy. Fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and grains can be eaten with either meat or dairy. [According to some views, fish may not be eaten with meat]. 6. Utensils that have come into contact with meat may not be used with dairy, and vice versa. Utensils that have come into contact with non-kosher food may not be used with kosher food. This applies only where the contact occurred while the food was hot. 7. Grape products made by non-Jews may not be eaten. Do you pass?

[un] we'd prefer if you didn't explode it please

The UN Security Council has urged North Korea not to carry out a planned test of a nuclear weapon warning that any test would endanger regional stability and provoke worldwide denunciation. Three days late, the council said such action would "jeopardise peace, stability and security in the region and beyond". What’s the point? I mean ... seriously ... whatever is the point of the UN and its resolutions?

[formula one] alonso takes japan

Defending drivers world champion Fernando Alonso celebrated like a man possessed today after he moved within a point of retaining his title by winning the Japanese Grand Prix. It was his first victory in eight races since the Canadian Grand Prix in June, his seventh win this year and the 15th of his career. Michael Schumacher's Ferrari suffered an engine failure. "Then it was completely a surprise when I saw what happened to Michael. Ferrari don't have many mechanical problems, so that was a big surprise for me. Alonso now leads Schumacher by 10 points in the drivers' standings and they are level on seven wins apiece this season. Schumacher can only claim an unprecedented eighth crown if he wins and Alonso fails to score a point in Sao Paulo.

[pedant general] the select society

My goodness I'm slow on the uptake: Our manifesto in recreating the Select in the form of a Blog is to allow those of us who enjoy the pursuit of philosophical enquiry to gather and record our take on today’s world. This Blog will reflect on current events, developments in the arts and sciences, and even sport. It is, as was the Select, a group effort and we hope it will be all the stronger and more readable for that. Click photo.

[crash] computer went down today
