[puberty blues] chinese medical science

China claims early puberty stunts growth. That's interesting - now I'm wondering about li'l old me all those years back.

How would you rate Chinese medical science? Advanced? Weird? Primitive? Inscrutable? They say this about why early puberty is becoming more prevalent:

# You are bombarded with sexual scenes on TV now. Such scenes stimulate children too and triggers hormone secretion;

# Such hormones are often found in fast food, which accelerate children's development;

# The problem is more serious in major cities than in the countryside because urban children are better fed.

Hmmm.

  1. A totally inexpert comment here, but I always thought boys continued to grow long after puberty. They don't reach full height until 18-20, but puberty is much earlier (11-14).

    The hormone thing is true in part in that one of the reasons they removed DES from beef production was because it was causing premature breasts in female children.

  2. Ironic that in China (where the land is awash in growing opportunities) the urbanites are more well-fed than the rurals :)

    While in the US, where technology makes cities virtual utopias, the people in the country still eat better than those bottom-feeding city dwellers heh

    JMB: puberty does indeed hit 11-14 and growth can continue through 21-23 or so. While mind growth (or actual 'growing up') can extend to 30's

  3. I didn't know that, JMB.

    Lord Nazh - mind growth (or actual 'growing up') can extend to 30's

    Or not at all, perhaps? :)
