[thought for the day] old wives' tales

From Lord of the Rings, Celeborn the Elf King says, in answer to Boromir, who thought the former was repeating old wives' tales:

"Do not depise the lore which has come down from distant years; for oft it may chance that old wives keep in memory word of things that once were needful for the wise to know."

  1. I think you'll find he said "lore", James. Sorry to be a pesky Tolkienite. It's my age you know.

Years ago I had a copy of the Hackers's Handbook (don't ask why) which contained a questionnaire about a target user to work out what his password was. Based on my age, education and a few other details it predicted mine would be "Galadriel" and so it was. Sad, really.

The main shock for me of seeing the recent movies was facing another man's vision of Galadriel. Blanchett's a quite passable woman, don't you know (even to those of us used to Slavic beauties) but she is not nearly as beautiful as the "real" Galadriel of my imagination.

  2. Tom:

1]'Pesky' is not the word. Tired and overwrought because of the Blogpower thing last night, I posted in haste and made the error. Now corrected.

2] Galadriel. Yes, the Aussie actress was not at all alluring to me and I couldn't see Gimli falling so completely for her either, to the point of asking for a lock of her hair.

Arwen was a bit better - she of the photo on the post. Incidentally, I have the goblin version of the film too and it's very funny. As the moment in the photo approaches, Agent Smith says: 'Make the enigmatic face, little fool.' Then they come together like two walruses and the sound effects dubbed onto the soundtrack are amusing. [To a warped mind, of course.]
