5.  Just as it was with Packer cricket

… so it is with choker Greg Norman:

In the bitter civil war between the tradition-steeped PGA Tour and its filthy-rich, Saudi-backed rival LIV over the future of golf, the money has come out on top. Leaders of the two organizations delivered a bombshell announcement on Tuesday that they will merge through a deal that will drag global golf into a ‘new era’ – whether the players, fans and sponsors like it or not.

Apple logs to those not old enough, not steeped in cricket lore, not steeped in golfing history. Those who are will know precisely why the next name I’ll mention is Nick Faldo.

Those grasping onto fuddy-duddy power … at yacht clubs they wear captains’ caps and blazers and harrumph “old boy” a lot … these are our “traditionalists” we’re supposedly supporting, versus these gauche “new men” with their World Series, their Superleagues, with Greig, Lillee, Chappell etc., their appalling dress sense … whilst plucky Mike Brierley faced demon Rodney Hogg at the MCG.  Oh for the days of Plum Warner.

I was an MCG attendee for the trad game. Once went to one of these WSC games and it was a bore. Can’t remember but wasn’t Alan Knott one of the “rebels” (codeword for gimme oodles more money)?

Don’t get me wrong … the coloured clowns probably did deserve some more money … the miserly trad oligarchs with their “for the love of the game, old chap”, whilst sipping on a whisky in the long room … it just didn’t quite cut it, did it?  Whilst trad myself, I’d committed the heinous crime of being young at the time. Lovely old chaps they were too … they spared time for me, I appreciated them … very pleasant days they were, match days in London and Melbourne, also at Headingley. Plus it was the spinners who mesmerised me, though my own minor league doings were as a medium-fast*, plus close in fieldsman … my fave was Silly Point … utter nutter.

*By the way, you want to know my devastating bowling strategy? It was “not the slightest clue where it was going”, it scudded a lot … in the delivery stride, the fingers might momentarily cramp up, the batsman, nonplussed, would offer a catch, everyone would say “well done, cunningly disguised”, to which I’d self-deprecatingly wave it away with an airy “par for the course, all in a day’s work”, at which someone behind would mutter “jammy bgr, we’ll be hearing about that for days”. I was a very great cricketer, a legend in my own lunchtime.  I could field though … honestly. 😎

  3. #7. This is the old 'Ops' room at Greenwich where the meridian line is. The people are all operating the calculating machines that push the minute hands around the world. 24 operators are each responsible for a longitude 'desk' to keep foreigners from nicking the English Hour. Not many people know that.
