One of the most timeless, eternal speeches opened with the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1) and the bit which particularly got me was:

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Yes and it was not just in this context either, it was universal. Once you do a Sydney Carton, then your faults and foibles are diminished in the eyes of the uncared for world, as you are doing right on behalf of the unrepresented, the unsung, the poor and the huddled.
