More reggae later. Maybe Osibisa.  Maybe Toots. By the way, just in case anyone's in London:

5.  Gibraltar

You may have seen this in the sidebar experiment. An interesting addition was in comments:

"That's not wholly true. Each successive siege of Gibraltar ended with Spain losing more territory. In order to prevent either side taking pot shots at the other, no man's land was settled as the distance of twice the length that a cannon ball could be fired. As cannons improved over the years, the distance that they fired increased.

Over the years, it was decided that an airfield was needed to connect Gibraltar to Britain and so the British built outwards into the bay to create enough land for the runway using their share of no man's land. Indeed the land border was actually set within 1 meter of the British share of no man's land. Which means that Spain technically recovered some territory when the airport was built.

The wartime airport had the terminal on the British side of the runway. When Spain decided to join the EU, Britain had already been a member for years. At the turn of the century, Britain built a new terminal, but this time it was placed on the Spanish side of the runway so that Spanish passengers could access the terminal.

This was also so that the Spanish would give consent to various airline treaties. Sadly, Spain still disputes those treaties, trespasses in British territorial waters and forces British planes to land outside Spanish airspace.

This means that British military jets have to take a very circuitous route to avoid Spanish airspace - even though both countries are in NATO!"

  1. 7. Pirate radio. So what are the odds that if twatter existed then any mention would hav been banned? The stations were a very innocent way to give the establishment a rude gesture, and it became very political near the Essex coast when the Marine Offences bill was passed with local Conservative politicians lobbying for legal land based licences while authorities were actually threatening arrest for anyone actively supporting R Caroline who kept transmitting. 50 years on and Radio Caroline are now - legally - on 648 metres medium wave, I still listen sometimes.
