Midweek movie

This is the one I've already reviewed:

All right, I've just re-read that review and think it does hold up, and so to two other points, one about her but the longer point a moral dilemma, which is going to involve further spoilers I'm afraid.

1.  Merry Anders

Pretty enough until you hear the hardbitten voice, which is certainly offputting, but somehow - maybe because she was no consummate actress - the real her started showing and it was a nicer her.

So I looked at the ggl images and they were mostly glamour but then her bio and certain things explained her lack of further actressy progress - she had a forgivable early life and later more orthodox one, quite at odds with the hard femme fatale of the film.

I fully understand viewers ridiculing the feelgood ending.  On the other hand, I feel it's consistent - here, finally, is this gal's chance, the main chance, with an incorruptible [almost] man.

2.  The conundrum of the killer [spoilers]

The killer on death row, due to hang at midnight, hence the clockwatching, was a rotten lot but that was not the issue - did he kill he victim or was it someone else?  It appears he was not the killer and so they hanged an innocent man.

Which of course raises the question of capital punishment and naturally, Hollywood/LA/Ca would be against it.

But things move on and the real wife appears, demure, not the little Merry Anders golddigger.  The male hero has meanwhile fallen for Merry and she uses it, but then falls herself.  Now it gets interesting, if guessable.

And now the big spoiler, so look away.  The real wife talks to the hero and in fact, the bad 'un had murdered her father in cold blood.  So though he did not hang for the right murder, he hung for a murder.

Hmmmm - much to discuss there.

Recommendation?  Methinks not a total waste of time, despite the wooden acting much of the time, interspersed with fine interludes.  Want to waste some more time?
