I like the recorder. My sister played it well and would sometimes play it to her younger brothers at bedtime - me and my older brother, sadly killed many years ago. She was the piper, a woman of intense emotions but also intelligent. Grammar school girl; science graduate, manager of people. Her repertoire, before she moved on to the cello, was almost exclusively English folk music and I loved it.
I like the recorder too. The small soprano ones are great for kids to learn on, and the good professional ones make a nice sound (almost) straight off. They went out of favour versus the flute because they lack the dynamic range, and low notes are always soft and high notes always loud.
I was amazed how quickly children learn to play the recorder. I started to teach myself, my children and their friends (7-9 years old) in September when they went back to school. By Christmas they were sufficiently proficient to play at the church carol service.

ReplyDeleteA flutophone (tonette) was an easy pick-up instrument in grade school compared to piano drudgery at the time.

ReplyDeleteI used to play it at school, I was ok, not great. There were school ones but we bought ours. Can remember taking it apart.
