[english national day] poll so far

Over at English Parliament, this is how the poll's going [click to view]:

Naturally, Brown wants a Workers Day [haven't they already got Walpurgis?] as close as possible to St. George's, to stymie an English National Day. I'm surprised that that sworn enemy of England still feels he's safe in London.

  1. There is really only one obvious choice. As the poll quite clearly shows.

  3. You guys refer to the Gunpowder Plot as "Bonfire Day"? That's awesome!

  4. Why would we want another holiday in the already crowded April/May?

Pick a date in July and that's the day.

  5. St George was quite inconsiderate the way he put his holiday on April 23rd.

    Thanks all.

  6. I'd rather a public holiday in Autumn. Too many in March/April and May already.

Anyway better have a local lad as patron saint rather than the patron Saint of Syphillis. Surely St Alban the protomartyr is a better choice. Or what abut St John of Beverley. Henry V didn't waste breath seeking George's intercession at Agincourt.

Unfortunately Alban andJohn's feast days are in May and June....

  7. Or we could use de Valera, the American. He's in October. Or Erskine Childers, in June.

  8. Why would you wantt to use De Valera James? The man was an utter arse whose dead hand held the Irish Republic back for decades. Ireland would probably have been a far better place if he had found a way to get his head blown off in the Troubles of the Civil War.

Erskine Chiders pere was executed in November 1922 but not much of a choice as a patron saint.. or Erskine Childers fils for that matter

  9. I don't really - St George's Day will do or Magna Carta Day if we can't have that.
