Blackberry picking is a dying art

Blackberry picking is a dying art

Wildlife experts say blackberry picking is a dying art, even when economic worries make it the perfect time to make use of what's on offer in our hedgerows

The quintessentially British pastime of blackberry picking is apparently on the wane

Elvis has left the building. You can't get the staff these days. My chief blackberry picker has gone off elsewhere. I hope you find what you are looking for James.

  1. I'm not sure if it's a quintessential pastime here in the States or not but we used to pick them all the time on the road to the dam when we were kids. Good times!

  2. Interestingly there was some shifty immigrant like chappy picking blackberries in a city centre carpark in Bradford on saturday.

  3. People are out everywhere here at this time of the year, harvesting nature's bounty. But in the store they cost a small fortune, as if they had been lovingly grown and nurtured.

  4. jmb: I saw Tesco was selling about a dozen in a pack for about £1.25p. I had to laugh at the amount for the price, knowing where I can get them for free in far greater amounts.

  6. I have to go a fair way to pick blackberries but it is worth the effort.... £1.25 a punnet? someone's extracting the urine methinks!

  7. Matt - keep at it.

Baht at - aye, that were me.

JMB - they taste better after being picked personally.

JHL - true but don't forget the thorns in your arms and neck.

    Cherie - plant them.

    Jams - too true.

  8. I eat blackberries as I walk. And so does George. I haven't gathered any this year yet though. Might do this afternoon in fact!

It's the principle of getting food for nothing.
