[pirates] this be the caribbean, after all

Áslaug Ösp Adalsteinsdóttir and Kári Jóhann Halldórsson have been sailing around the world for the past two years. Last Saturday night they were anchored off the coast of Venezuela, near the island Margarita, when pirates arrived. Halldórsson told RÚV that he had been on deck but his wife asleep in the cabin when he suddenly found himself staring down the barrel of a gun.

The pirates fetched Adalsteinsdóttir from the cabin and tied her and her husband together on the deck. One robber pointed a gun at the couple while the others went through their belongings, stealing anything valuable.

Before leaving the yacht the pirates covered Halldórsson’s and Adalsteinsdóttir’s heads with a sheet, and Adalsteinsdóttir said she believed they would be executed. But the thieves left without harming the couple and after a while they managed to cut themselves loose and sail to the nearest town for help. Police in Venezuela are investigating the robbery be worth ISK 1.5 million (EUR 16,753, USD 21,422).

This blog feels that if you choose to sail anywhere near Venezuela ... well ... it is the Caribbean, after all. In an interesting aside, when kids google ‘pirate’ for some project or other, they can now also access 'lesbian' and 'gay' pirates to add to their work. Isn’t that helpful? Soon there'll no doubt be 'Roger the Coke Snorter'.
