[self defence] citizens doing it for themselves

M1911

Angus reports on the ammunition shortages in the U.S.:

The shortages are so bad that retail globocorp Wal-Mart has been forced to introduce rationing at the ammo counter in many of its stores. Depending on calibre, customers may be limited to purchases of just 50 rounds at a time.

Apparently, classic .45 ACP pistol ammunition is especially scarce - a fairly good indication that it is in fact conservative Middle America rather than, say, inner-city criminals buying up all the ammo.

Joe Huffman does the mathematics on the issue:

Nine billion rounds in one year with about 80 million gun owners in the U.S. works out to about only about 112 rounds per gun owner. I went through that many rounds both last night and the night before.

I'll go through probably another 200 rounds tonight and then another 150 on Sunday. What the heck is going on here? I'm figure I'm just doing my civic duty here and it turns out I'm doing the job of about 100 other people as well.

If every gun owner were going through just 100 rounds a month that would be nearly 100 billion rounds a year. That is a way to stimulate the economy and have something to show for it afterward--an armed and well practiced citizenry and respectful politicians.

To say that we, in the UK, are not doing the same thing is partly so but there are still a lot of people on the ground that are quietly preparing. To not allow a citizen in his own home to defend his family, on pain of criminal charges being brought and the intruder getting off scot-free is the UK way these days but it can't last forever.

The pics top and bottom are my weapons of choice.

  1. Like evrything there are tools for certain jobs. I feel confident that you will never really need an SMG. Next best tool would be a shotgun or a rifle after the 1911. Personally, I would get the versatile shotgun before the 1911. Especially as in the UK you can get one legally.

  2. As I understand it, one of the reasons why we are not allowed guns in the home in the UK is that, if we arre not expert, they could be used against us. People can't just be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

  3. And yet by some miracle, WL, Canadian householders are armed to the teeth and don't die in droves as burglars turn their weapons on them.

  4. I think I'd go for the Glock.40 and a Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun firing alternate slugs and flechette rounds

  5. You can forget all your stockpiling of food... water... gold bars... solar/wind power and digging for victory... if you can't effectively defend yourself... it will be taken from you by simple force or coercion. Guns of choice... The Glock 17 9mm Pistol (common ammunition) and a Winchester survival shotgun... with a shedload of ammo... oh yes... and a boxer Henry .45 with a bayonet firmly attached with some guts behind it.

Until then, we'll have to make do with the green custard.

  6. The truth is, Cakes, it is none of your business if a burglar turns a weapon upon the owner, or my business if you are degraded by a misanthrope because you will not have one. What you really want is to eliminate choice in others so you cannot be compared in your own choice.
We have six times less burglaries in America than in the UK. It can be said you are making a criminal class through your high opinions of yourselves.

  7. Good choices, James. Though personally I prefer my Mossberg 500 rather than the rifle. The 1911 is my favorite though; I first learned to shoot one when I was ten years old and have liked it ever since.
