This is one of those which supposedly automatically switches to parts 2, 3 and so on. I read one of the comments which said, 'Why doesn't Linnet have a British accent? It's really bothering me for some reason.' It does me too and there are other anomalies. Linnet is outwardly not charming here whereas she gave the appearance of nice in the original. Jacqueline is not French enough here and a few of the others don't seem quite right but David Suchet is excellent as usual. The settings are exotic and the score appropriate. It grows on you, this version.
Linnet with an American accent could be acceptable, she was after all the daughter of an American, who married into the county.

Yes, she was the daughter of an American and not one from the Boston area. It was money based.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet she's presented in the book as educated. At the risk of incurring wrath [and my accent itself is not quite RP so many say educated South African but it's not Tony Greig], her particular American accent is colloquial, which would surely have been picked up on on by the UC Brits on the voyage.
Jacqueline seems wrong too and her accent is standard LMC Brit, which is not right for the role as she has French in her.
I don't particularly care in RL but in this film, it does stop you enough, as the commenter said, to think about it.
The accents that annoy me are the anachronistic ones. If gels from the 30s speak in a 70s or 90s accent, I shout at the screen. In a well-modulated shriek, of course.
