[mystery country] the ancient world

Same rules as before - try to get it on the first clue:

1. had the tallest building in the world from 1280 to 1549;

2. invented the tin can;

3. its top university once had rules that specifically forbade students from bringing bows and arrows to class;

4. home to the Gytrash;

5. is not officially recognized as a country.

Clue for no points: Its lowest land point is getting even lower each year.

  1. I had to go all the way to the bottom, the no points one. If it is what I think it is, that's impressive.

  3. After googling what a Gytrash is and the fact that it isn't recognised as a country I think that it is part of the UK. I'll go for England.

  4. On the grounds that the answer will always be given the next day, Ross gets the prize.

    Yes, it is England and that building was Lincoln Cathedral.

  5. I got it on the first one, though I guess England was in my mind because I came here via the Witan club.

    I knew it was a cathedral but I was thinking Salisbury. No idea what a gytrash was till I googled it though!
