[flight] amazing how these things stay up there

Think they were pretty lucky but the procedures were obviously good.

  1. Mice? To be serious, Qantas have an exemplary safety culture and their record is evidence of them never taking things for granted. From the picture the damage doesn't look structural so there was no risk of it falling apart in air, but as most air accidents are the result of an accumulation of causes, diverting quickly to the nearest airport was the only option.

  2. I agree with Gallimaufry, Qantas are one of the better airlines. Makes you wonder about the others...

  3. That pilot did very well to land safely. He deserves commendation.

  4. Qantas does have a good safety record but for how long? With Airline competition, airfares have become very affordable and much cheaper.

Well to maintain profitabilty something has got to give ... and that may have to be mechanical engineering.

Qantas are continually cutting staff, which is not a good sign.

  5. Agree with Ardent here - not a good sign. Gallimaufry, Cherie, Welshcakes and Dragonstar - those points hold water.

  6. Unbelievable and scary. I don't think I would be anxious to get on the replacement plane if I were one of those passengers.

  7. I am an avid viewer of 'Air Crash Investigation.' Although Becky seems to feel more nervous every times she watches it, I always feel safer. After every incident, air investigators will go through the evidence thoroughly and make their report. This incident will be no exception.

I do agree with you, James. It is amazing how they manage to fly in the first place and then stay there for hours.

  8. The physics is relatively simple but that's still a lot of weight up there.
