If there was ever a public figure who even admitted she was Queen of People's Hearts, it was Diana Spencer of the House of Stewart. So the outcry over the non-inclusion of the public at the memorial service seems justified:Penny Junor said: "If it is a personal family occasion why have Elton John and Cliff Richard been invited?
Whilst understanding the wishes of the princes, who have always been quite private in their leanings, do they have the right to deny the people access? How far do family wishes trump national interest?
Diana should be allowed to rest in a semblance of peace. While I'm sure that the Daily Express will be printing her on the front page on a regular basis for years to come, I'm bored by the appearance of someone who has been dead for a decade on the television with some regularity. I would not object so much were it not for there being other, serious news stories that are being bumped off the bulletins to report on what is, ultimately, a non-story.
ReplyDeleteAh, can't the public go and weep into the Diana Memorial Fountain and give her boys a break? I thought the service was being broadcast for the benefit of those who didn't know Diana, but who still wished to view.

The is-ness remains that Diana fascinates most people and as long as that's true she will be a public person. I think the idea of two ceremonies is sensible - a private one for the family, and a public one for the people.
ReplyDeleteI think that given 10 years have passed and they all ready did a do on her birthday, why would people be so up in arms anyway? I loved Diana but........ I think she would love to still be able to make headlines and a fuss.:)

ReplyDeletePerhaps the private ceremony and excerpts could perhaps be shown on a big screen in the evening - somethng like that. Though we heartily want to drop the thing, there are many who wish to remember it and their needs also need to be respected.
ReplyDeleteI have to say if people want a public ceremony let them have it. I'm not sure that that excludes another private one elsewhere. Not sure about televising it James that would make it as public ultimately. To be honest though its not an issue I care about.
